If You Like This You Should Read That: Netflix Edition

Have you ever watched something on Netflix and thought, “wow, this reminds me of that book I read”? Because I have. Many times.

And I’m not talking about the Netflix originals that are book adaptations because those are another thing entirely.

While Netflix has its fair share of original programming and movies these days, often times stories and thematic elements overlap in different mediums, even if it’s not on purpose. But it’s through those commonalities that you’re able to expose yourself to new stories you never thought you’d be interested in, all because it reminds you of one single thing you enjoyed once.

So, if you’re like me and read or watch things because it reminds you of something, or are simply looking for new titles to read and watch, here are some recommendations.

It’s about the vibes, ok?

If You Like Outer Banks…

Outer Banks (TV Series 2020– ) - IMDb

…You should Read Alex, Approximately

Alex, Approximately: Amazon.ca: Bennett, Jenn: Books

Even though Alex, Approximately is a pretty loose reimagining of You’ve Got Mail, there are actually a lot of commonalities with Outer Banks. The settings have the same feel, the characters are reminiscent of each other, and they both make you wish you could have a carefree summer as a teen. Unless you’re John B., because your summer will be anything but fun.

If You Like Julie and the PhantomS…

…You Should Read Daisy Jones and The Six

Daisy Jones & The Six: A Novel: Reid, Taylor Jenkins: 9780385692175: Books - Amazon.ca

Hear me out. Is one adult fiction and the other a (technically) children’s show? Yes. Do they both have an amazing cast of characters, bands you wish were real, and epic stories to tell? Absolutely. What’s so great about these two titles is that the stories feel so timeless and while they do have their audience labels, they can be enjoyed by anyone. And two words: Kenny fricking Ortega.

If You Like Spinning Out…

Spinning Out (TV Series 2020) - IMDb

…You Should Read From Lukov With Love

From Lukov with Love by Mariana Zapata

Competitive figure skaters, enemies to lovers, and fascinating stories of self discovery and acceptance, these two titles are probably the closest comparisons on today’s list. I didn’t love Zapata’s book but I fell head over heels for Spinning Out and I absolutely understand why a lot of people watch the show after reading the book, or vice versa. I’m still very upset Netflix cancelled it after one season but at least it’s not too cliffhanger-y.

If You Like Emily in Paris…

Emily in Paris (TV Series 2020– ) - IMDb

…You Should Read Anna and the French Kiss

Anna and the French Kiss: Perkins, Stephanie: 9780142419403: Books - Amazon.ca

What’s more entertaining than obnoxious Americans moving to Paris knowing nothing about the culture or the language? Honestly, these two titles are the perfect form of escapism right now, immediately transporting you to Paris and wishing you could move there for school or for work. They’re fun and light stories that help to take your mind off things and I think we all need a bit more of that.

If You Like Titans…

…You Should Read Renegades

Renegades: Amazon.ca: Meyer, Marissa: Books

Morally grey superheroes; what more could you need? I know that Titans is technically a DC Universe title but it’s also on Netflix and therefore it counts. But what’s so great about Renegades is how Meyer writes both sides of the superhero concept, exploring both heroes and villains, and really exploring the middle ground. I feel like Dick Grayson’s character does a lot of that himself and he’d fit into this world nicely. Both are new takes on the hero genre and definitely do a lot to stand out.

So, what are you gonna pick up next?
